Abstract: This paper presents an original interpretation of the Upanishads, in relation to all the dozens of passages that indicate that the Self operates in our sleep. The Upanishads identify two stages of sleep, deep sleep and dreaming sleep, and is very clear on the fact that the Self is at work during both these stages, especially dreaming sleep. It is argued that these passages should be taken literally, which means that the Self really is located in the part of the brain that operates during sleep. Incidentally according to Freud dreams are the ‘royal road to the Unconscious, and thus Freud’s Unconscious mind and the Hindu Inner Self are one and the same thing. And as this is the location of our Unconscious it is also likely to be the location of the Freudian Ego as well – that is to say our unconscious motivations. The part of the brain that operates during sleep is the lower regions of the brain, the so-called Reptilian part of the brain which also happens to be the original embryo brain (hypothalamus, thalamus, midbrain and brainstem). All the higher regions of the brain grew out of that. In other words the embryo brain is not a ‘nothing’ brain but a sleeping brain. We start out in this world as a sleeping embryo and the waking state comes about six months into gestation when the fetus’ eyes open for the first time. In addition the fetus spends up to 80% of its time in this REM dreaming sleep which indicates that REM sleep is a genetic programming mechanism for the brain.
